Why does our leather look and feel the way it does? We use only American hides that are preselected to be processed as a drum dyed "naked" leather. Out of every ten hides seen by the tanner only one can be channeled towards this direction-- the rest have their natural markings corrected by sanding and spray painting. Naked leather shows the varied grain and deep texture of the hide the same way oiled hardwood does. By drum dying, rather than painting, the color penetrates the fibers instead of laying on the surface. As a result, scratches can simply be rubbed out and the wonderfully sensual feel of the skin is not compromised. Naturally occurring scars and discolorations have to be methodically cut around-- rendering up to thirty percent of the leather nonusable. Products made from this kind of leather require skilled craftsmanship, meticulous handling and slower production rates-- hence a higher finished goods price, but the results can be achieved no other way.
